How to Choose the Right Platinum RTV-2 Silicone
How to Choose the Right Platinum RTV-2 Silicone
There is no single silicone grade that is best for every mold.
Before selecting a product, consider the following factors.
1. Mold Size
Large molds may require different viscosity, working time and mechanical properties from small molds.
2. Model Geometry
Complex models with undercuts generally require a flexible silicone that can be removed without damaging the mold or master.
3. Required Detail
For highly detailed models, flowability and appropriate viscosity can be especially important.
4. Shore Hardness
Choose a hardness that provides the right balance between flexibility and mold support.
5. Tear Strength
For molds with thin sections, deep undercuts or repeated demolding, tear strength can be an important consideration.
6. Working Time
Select a working time that matches your mixing, pouring, degassing and application process.
7. Cure Time
The curing speed should match your production schedule.
8. Casting Material
The compatibility between the cured silicone and the casting material should be evaluated before production.
9. Temperature Requirements
If the mold will be exposed to elevated temperatures, select a grade designed for the required operating conditions.
10. Production Volume
For prototype work, occasional production and high-volume mold production, the most suitable silicone formulation may be different.
